Cheerleaders Want Uniforms With More Coverage

While many were flabbergasted over the sexual nature of young girls dancing in the World of Dance competition,  many believe that what young cheerleaders are being asked to do, say and wear these days is much worse.

One mother complained that her 6 year old daughter was kicked off a local flag-football cheerleading squad after both parents questioned the appropriateness of one of the chants. (The lyrics: “Our backs ache, our skirts are too tight, we shake our booties from left to right.”)

In Connecticut the girls complained that outfits that didn’t cover their mid section violated school dress codes.

According to research from the University of South Carolina, College cheerleaders are prone to eating disorders, and how severe their disordered eating becomes partly depends on how revealing their cheerleading costumes are. As the young women get older more sexually explicit booty shaking is requested and skimpier uniforms that more often resemble lingerie than the skirts and sweaters of yesteryear.

Sadly, whether it is dance or cheering both venues seem to work together to help teach young girls wherein their power lies. Let Media Watch know your story about dance or cheerleading for young girls and outfits that may not even meet school’s dress code standards.

  1. The ability to ignore the connection between the hyper-sexualization of girls and young women and pedophilia really amazes me. These types of behavior normalize and condone the idea of girls and women as sexual commodities. As the article states, this teaches young girls where their power lies, it also tells us all that they are fair game.
